‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?
Light-based treatment is certainly having a surge in popularity. You can now buy illuminated devices for everything from complexion problems and aging signs to aching tissues and oral inflammation, the latest being a dental hygiene device equipped with tiny red LEDs, described by its makers as “a significant discovery in at-home oral care.” Worldwide, the market was worth $1bn in 2024 and is projected to grow to $1.8bn by 2035. Options include full-body infrared sauna sessions, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. Based on supporter testimonials, the experience resembles using an LED facial mask, enhancing collagen production, relaxing muscles, relieving inflammation and long-term ailments while protecting against dementia.
Understanding the Evidence
“It sounds a bit like witchcraft,” notes Paul Chazot, a scientist who has studied phototherapy extensively. Naturally, we know light influences biological functions. Our bodies produce vitamin D through sun exposure, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Light exposure controls our sleep-wake cycles, as well, activating brain chemicals and hormonal responses in daylight, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Daylight-simulating devices frequently help individuals with seasonal depression to elevate spirits during colder months. So there’s no doubt we need light energy to function well.
Different Light Modalities
Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, consumer light therapy products mostly feature red and infrared emissions. In serious clinical research, including research on infrared’s impact on neural cells, finding the right frequency is key. Light constitutes electromagnetic energy, extending from long-wavelength radiation to short-wavelength gamma rays. The side-effects of UVB exposure, including sunburn or skin darkening, are recognized but medical equipment uses controlled narrow-band delivery – indicating limited wavelength spectrum – which decreases danger. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, thus exposure is controlled,” explains the dermatologist. Essentially, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to confirm suitable light frequency output – different from beauty salons, where regulations may be lax, and wavelength accuracy isn’t verified.”
Commercial Products and Research Limitations
Colored light diodes, he notes, “don’t have strong medical applications, but they may help with certain conditions.” Red light devices, some suggest, help boost blood circulation, oxygen uptake and skin cell regeneration, and promote collagen synthesis – an important goal for anti-aging. “The evidence is there,” comments the expert. “Although it’s not strong.” Regardless, with numerous products on the market, “we’re uncertain whether commercial devices replicate research conditions. Appropriate exposure periods aren’t established, proper positioning requirements, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Many uncertainties remain.”
Specific Applications and Professional Perspectives
Early blue-light applications focused on skin microbes, bacteria linked to pimples. The evidence for its efficacy isn’t strong enough for it to be routinely prescribed by doctors – even though, notes the dermatologist, “it’s frequently employed in beauty centers.” Certain patients incorporate it into their regimen, he observes, however for consumer products, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. If it’s not medically certified, standards are somewhat unclear.”

Meanwhile, in advanced research areas, scientists have been studying cerebral tissue, identifying a number of ways in which infrared can boost cellular health. “Pretty much everything I did with the light at that particular wavelength was positive and protective,” he says. The numerous reported benefits have generated doubt regarding phototherapy – that results appear unrealistic. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.
The scientist mainly develops medications for neurological conditions, however two decades past, a doctor developing photonic antiviral treatment consulted his scientific background. “He created some devices so that we could work with them with cells and with fruit flies,” he says. “I was quite suspicious. The specific wavelength measured approximately 1070nm, that many assumed was biologically inert.”
Its beneficial characteristic, however, was its efficient water penetration, meaning it could penetrate the body more deeply.

More evidence was emerging at the time that infrared light targeted the mitochondria in cells. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, generating energy for them to function. “All human cells contain mitochondria, particularly in neural cells,” notes the researcher, who, as a neuroscientist, decided to focus the research on brain cells. “Research confirms improved brain blood flow with phototherapy, which is generally advantageous.”
With 1070 treatment, mitochondria also produce a small amount of a molecule known as reactive oxygen species. In limited quantities these molecules, explains the expert, “activates protective proteins that safeguard mitochondria, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”
Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: oxidative protection, anti-inflammatory, and pro-autophagy – self-digestion mechanisms eliminating harmful elements.
Current Research Status and Professional Opinions
Upon examining current studies on light therapy for dementia, he reports, about 400 people were taking part in four studies, comprising his early research projects
