More than 250 Taken into Custody in Charlotte as Border Enforcement Accelerates
Over 250 people have been arrested in Charlotte, North Carolina, as part of continuing federal immigration enforcement actions, according to official sources.
Widening Federal Measures
Charlotte constitutes the most recent American city to experience strengthened federal deployment, following comparable operations in bigger metropolitan areas like Chicago and Los Angeles previously. Government officials have claimed that those detained include persons with illegal activities and gang members.
Regional Opposition
However, local lawmakers and inhabitants have actively protested the apprehensions, which federal agencies have termed "Operation Charlotte's Web". The state's chief executive has asserted that residents are being selected based on their racial background.
"We've seen masked, well-armed personnel in tactical attire driving plain vehicles, focusing on American citizens based on their physical characteristics, practicing racial profiling and arresting random people in community locations," stated the state governor. "This methodology is not improving our protection."

In a freshly published statement, a federal spokesperson asserted that the operation has resulted in the arrest of "among the most hazardous criminal illegal immigrants", encompassing organized crime affiliates.
Further persons detained had been found guilty for various crimes, such as violence toward law enforcement officers, driving while intoxicated, robbery and manipulating government records, according to the agency.

The city's chief executive, also a liberal politician, requested federal authorities to operate with "consideration" for the city's principles. She furthermore commended those who engaged in substantial numbers on Saturday to oppose the federal authority's measures in the city.
"I am seriously worried by many of the footage I've observed," commented the city leader. "To all individuals in Charlotte who is experiencing anxious or fearful: you are not by yourself. Your city backs you."

Federal agencies have not disclosed how long the enforcement actions will last. Chicago's operation started in September and continues active. Like other cities experiencing immigration measures, some foreign nationals in Charlotte are staying indoors due to fear about federal officers in the city, according to local media.
The state governor indicated he's tracking information that the campaign will expand to Raleigh, another North Carolina city, following.
"Yet again, I urge federal agents to target violent lawbreakers, not neighbors moving along the road, attending religious services, or displaying Christmas decorations," he stated.
