UN Removes Restrictions on Syrian President Prior to Presidential Visit

Security Council representatives voted in favour to an American proposal removing restrictions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa prior to his White House visit next week.

He was appointed provisional head of state following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that ousted Bashar al-Assad in December 2024, ending 13 years of internal conflict.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz declared the global body transmitted "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" following Assad's ouster.

Previously, he faced UN sanctions as the leader of the Islamist group HTS, which was formerly linked to the terrorist network. The US removed the organization from the catalog of international terrorist organizations this past July.

More Penalties Removed

Additionally, the United Nations lifted sanctions on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab.

The nation's top diplomat expressed satisfaction with the elimination of these restrictions, posting on social media: "Syrian officials convey thanks toward America and allied countries for assisting the Syrian nation and citizens."

Upcoming White House Meeting

The Syrian leader's Washington trip on Monday follows US President Donald Trump said the Syrian leader had made "good progress" in establishing peace to the previously divided state.

Subsequent to their talks, the US president stated Sharaa had "a legitimate chance for national reconciliation".

The two leaders convened initially during May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia during a visit to the Middle East.

Following that encounter, Trump portrayed him as a "resilient figure" having a "formative history".

His former militant faction operated as the terrorist network's partner within Syria until he severed ties back in 2016.

Previous US Visit

This week's diplomatic engagement is not Sharaa's first trip to the United States in the current year. This past fall, he became the first Syrian leader to present to the United Nations gathering at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

Throughout his presentation, he declared the nation was "restoring its proper position among the nations of the world" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
